CAPE LEOPARD ON MY CAMERA TRAP!!!

I set my camera trap up in an ancient Milkwood Forest at Greenpop’s Reforest Fest (@greenpopsa), not even daring to hope that I might capture anything on camera, let alone a Cape Leopard! But on Easter Sunday, everything came together!

First, a Cape Genet scent marked and walked past. Then a Cape Porcupine came along in search of food. And then, almost at midnight, a beautiful Male Leopard walked down the trail, investigating the scents around him. After pausing momentarily, he then walked right under my camera trap!

I have to say, I could not believe it when I saw this footage. I just started crying. I have dreamed about getting a Cape Leopard on my very own camera trap for a long time now and now there it was, the most beautiful and elusive cat, patrolling an ancient forest.

Not a bad spot to plant some trees 🤩

We planted 5000 locally indigenous trees yesterday with @platbosforest in the Uilenkraal Valley, and this was one of the planting locations for the day 💚🌳🌿 . Set alongside a babbling brook, beneath a lush canopy of existing forest, our planters got their hands dirty.

South Africa has various indigenous trees which enhance ecosystems, cultures and landscapes. Here are 3 indigenous trees seen on our Valentine’s Day tree certificates, with some distinctive characteristics!

💛 Acacia Karroo Tree:
• A captivating tree with vibrant yellow flowers, and shielded by discreet thorns.
• Its common name, “sweet thorn,” comes from the sweet tree gum it produces.

🌸 Pompon Tree:
• It is also known as the Pincushion Tree or locally as “umqwashube.”
• The tree resembles a candy-floss tree during the festive season.

After donating to a PBO of your choice, request a Section 18A form and fill in your details. This form can then be submitted when submitting your tax returns with SARS.

Our Co-Founder and Executive Director @mishateasdale has been using the skills learnt from our Urban Greening program to cultivate his own thriving vegetable garden 🍅 🥬

"How does your garden grow? It’s pretty straight forward - creating abundance through time, energy, experimentation, selecting the things you want to harvest and daily dose of spending time in the garden.

Gardening has been my therepy, my garden market, doctor, my gym and place of thinking. If you do one thing in 2024, start a garden. It feeds you in so many ways.

Outside of the deliciousness of the bounty that it can provide, there’s a study called Blue Zones where Dan Bueatner explores cultures with the most centenaries from around the world. A common thread between these cultures that live long with the most wellness - they don’t exercise in the conventional sense, but they do live incredibly active lives on the day to day.

Their routines are filled with physical labour. Tending to a garden you love gives you this. Making compost, building soil, harvesting the evening meal. All these activities support the garden of your life experience to give you a long and healthy life." - Misha Teasdale

South Africa boasts a large variety of indigenous trees, across its 9 biomes. Here are 3 with some unique characteristics!

Baobab Tree:
• Can hold close to 4,500l in its trunk
• The baobab’s fruit is packed with vitamin C

The Giant Quiver Tree:
• The biggest species of aloe known to science.
• Given that they have a lifespan of up to 380 years, seeing one of these artifacts is like peering back into history.

The Tree Wisteria:
• One of the most beautiful trees that can reach 7m in height.
• It has striking pea-shaped purple blossoms in the warmer months

An update from the field 🌳

January saw members of our Monitoring and Evaluation team return to Heartland Organic Farm to inspect the health of the trees after they flagged the presence of potential Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer beetle during the September 2023 M&E fieldwork.

After a thorough inspection of the forest, the team were unable to find any evidence of the invasive PSHB. While the team did find evidence of borer beetles in some of the trees, these were identified as indigenous species and, more importantly, did not contain any evidence of the deadly Fusarium euwallaceae fungus which is transmitted by the PSHB beetles. Additionally, the boring did not penetrate the hardwood of the affected trees and was limited to their bark.

At the beginning of January, Greenpop conducted a monitoring and evaluation field trip to our Khoinania Forest Restoration Project (FFL7) in Nature’s Valley. 🌳

Our team monitored two sites, namely FFL7C and FFL7D. Site FFL7C is showing growth, however, it is struggling compared to the other sites in the project, likely as a result of nearby Eucalyptus trees adversely affecting the soil.

In contrast, site FFL7D is looking really healthy with patches of large Keeurboom providing shade to the slower-growing species. The monitoring team expect large growth on this site over the next couple of years.

These different observations will be incorporated into our project planning for this year, and this adaptive management approach will ensure positive changes are evident when our monitoring team returns to Nature’s Valley later this year.

Yesterday we were joined by our sponsor @go2africa for a garden maintenance day at Mountain Road Primary School. The school is also right next to our Eco-Education Hub! 🌳

The maintenance day was built around activities that helped us maintain the fynbos garden we constructed at the school. These activities were then linked to various environmental education topics and accompanying games, which included:

🌿Discussing the Cape Floral Kingdom and its threats (including alien invasive) - Activity: Weeding in the garden.
🌵Finding out how succulents are adapted to dry environments. - Activity: Mulching the pathways in the garden.
🌸 Teaching the kids how to propagate different fynbos plants. - Activity: Pruning the shrubs in the fynbos garden.

On Tuesday the 28th of November we celebrated the end of our 2022/23 Family Food Gardens Project, in collaboration with @UrbanHarvest. The top achievers, Ezra, Nothemba and Gugu, from the Langa cohort of this project received a certificate at our prize-giving ceremony held earlier this year, as well as a visit to Babylonstoren.

A big thank you to Babylonstoren, who granted us free entry into the gardens and were so welcoming on the day - making our time there extra special!

We were joined by Optimum Investment last week for a garden maintenance day at Mountain Road Primary! 🌱

During the maintenance day we played a variety of educational games and enjoyed fun activities with the students and Optimum Investment team. These included:

🌱Propagating cuttings
♻️ A recycling game, where we also picked up litter in the garden
🌳 We also taught the students all about the lifecycle of a tree, through a fun game of rock paper scissors (if you win, you level up in your "tree growth" i.e. from a seed, sprout, and seedling, to a tree).
🎨 Nature-inspired rock painting

If you've been to one of our garden days, you'll know that they are synonymous with refreshing @bosworld Ice Tea!

We were joined by the team from @bosworld last week for a day in the garden at West Riding Primary 🌱

Despite the sweltering heat, we came together with the @bosworld team and the eager students from West Riding Primary who helped us in the garden as we planted water-wise/ indigenous plants.

Our Greenpop team celebrated the end of the year with @veldandsea last Friday! Our team learnt all about sustainable marine foraging and the bountiful beauty and abundance of our coastlines 🌊 🐚

After sustainably foraging for kelp, seaweed and mussels in the rockpools, we headed back to cook up a delicious feast - thai green curry with mussels, and delectable seaweed spaghetti to name a few! 😍
