Public voting to choose the ‘World’s Leading Cable Car Ride’ closes in just a few days. Your vote can help make sure that Table Mountain’s famous cableway wins this global accolade, Cape {town} Etc reports.
At the same time, Table Mountain itself is also up for another global title – ‘World’s Leading Tourist Attraction.’ The competition is hosted by the World Travel Awards.
‘The World Travel Awards is the Oscars for the tourism and hospitality sector. We need everyone in South Africa to help us win these two coveted awards – this will be a first if we win them,’ says Selma Hercules, executive director for the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC).
Competition in the World’s Leading Cable Car Ride category is tough.
Nominated alongside TMACC are the Cable Car at Sun World Ba Na Hills in Vietnam, the Disney Skyliner Cable Car in America, Mi Teleférico in Bolivia, Parque Bondinho Pão de Açúcar in Brazil, PEAK 2 PEAK 360 in Canada, Skyline Queenstown in New Zealand, and last year’s category winner the Wings of Tatev in Armenia.
Speaking of tough competition – in the category World’s Leading Tourist Attraction, it is even more fierce. Table Mountain is up against a long list of favourite sites, such as defending titleholders the Guinness Storehouse in Ireland, Canada’s Niagara Falls, Machu Pichu in Peru, and the Taj Mahal in India to name just a few.
‘The World Travel Awards is an important benchmarking opportunity for all of us in the industry. It helps us to focus our efforts on providing a world-class experience for our visitors and we are honoured to be nominated alongside the world’s best,’ says Hercules.
She adds that the winner of ‘Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction’ will be announced in Kenya later this week (on 18 October 2024). Table Mountain won this category five times before, most recently in 2022.
‘While we hold our breath in anticipation to hear if we have regained this title on the African continent, we need your support to be crowned the world’s best cable car ride and attraction. What a win this will be for Cape Town for SA and Africa. Just imagine if we can kick off the summer season with the news that Cape Town is host to both the “World’s Leading Cable Car Ride” and “World’s Leading Tourist Attraction”‘, says Hercules.
Voting is done online and closes this Sunday (20 October 2024) with the winner due to be announced in November.
