Apple lovers in South Africa have something new to look forward to this season. Pick n Pay has become the first retailer to introduce Sassy™ apples, a vibrant and bold new variety grown locally for the very first time.
Originally developed in New Zealand, these apples offer a perfect balance of sweetness and tang, making them an exciting addition to the South African fruit scene.
Sassy™ apples stand out with their deep red hue and crisp, juicy texture. Known for their signature zing, these apples provide a satisfying crunch in every bite. Rebecca Fifield, food technologist at Pick n Pay, describes the apple as a game-changer for anyone who loves a fresh, tart bite with a touch of sweetness.
“Apples are a staple in many households, and we’re always eager to introduce something fresh and exciting,” says Fifield. With over 11 popular apple varieties already on the shelves, South Africans are clearly fond of this versatile fruit. While red apples remain the top choice for many shoppers, the arrival of Sassy™ apples brings something new to the table, offering a distinctive flavour and texture that sets them apart.

Pick n Pay’s collaboration with local growers is part of a broader effort to introduce international fruit varieties with a unique twist. In recent years, the retailer has successfully launched other exotic produce such as caviar limes and Dekopon mandarins. These fruits became so popular that some stores even had waiting lists for them.
The introduction of Sassy™ apples follows in the footsteps of these successful launches, allowing South African consumers to enjoy premium produce while supporting local farmers. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer this unique variety, which will grow in availability as the orchard matures,” says Fifield.

Currently, Sassy™ apples are available in limited quantities at select Pick n Pay stores, including Constantia and Plattekloof in Cape Town, as well as On Nicol and Douglasdale in Johannesburg. To celebrate their arrival, these stores will host in-store tastings this Saturday, allowing customers to try this new, flavour-packed apple firsthand.
As the Sassy™ apple trees continue to grow and yield more fruit in the coming years, this variety is expected to become a regular fixture in local supermarkets. For now, eager apple fans will want to grab these limited-edition apples while they last!
Key characteristics of the Sassy™ Apple:
