We spotted these beautiful origami swan bowls at KAMERS/Makers Jo’burg and asked the creative behind them, Morongwe Mokone, a few questions
How, why and when did you start Origami.is.me?
When living in England, 10 years ago, my Japanese roommate made origami swans. This was the first time I’d seen origami and I was immediately intrigued. I just had to learn how to do it!
Where did you grow up?
I’m originally from Pretoria, but lived in London and Paris for six years.
If you didn’t own Origami.is.me what would you be doing instead?
Origami.is.me is actually a side business I own, I work full time for Nestlé at their head office in Jo’burg.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration right now is a motivational speaker, Les Brown. He has instilled self-belief in me, and this is where I find confidence, drive and the motivation to make a business from selling paper art. Who would have thought paper could make one money?
What has been the highlight of your career?
When Origami.is.me was awarded the Best Product of the Kamers Market 2016.
Your decor style in three words
Modern, different and handmade.
