We get up close and personal with decorator Zania Grobbelaar who designed the colourful patio featured in our September 2016 issue
Why did you choose this career?
Creativity and design are my passion. I started studying engineering but soon realised that I needed to be more creative. Interior design gave me that opportunity.
Where did you study?
Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
What has been the highlight of your career?
Job satisfaction and the opportunity to travel for inspiration. Happy clients and new ideas are always a highlight.
Your decor style in three words.
Practical, natural, textured.
Top tip for anyone wanting to be a decorator?
You must be prepared to live passionately within this industry. It’s not just a job you are taking on, it’s a lifestyle.
What current trend is your favourite?
Rough luxe.
If you could do one thing to lift a room what would it be?
Declutter and add texture. It works like a bomb!
What is your favourite room in your home and why?
I absolutely love my new home studio as it has a magnificent view over the ocean and the surrounding Helderberg Mountains. I find my creativity is at its best here and it’s where I spend most of my time when I’m at home.
What was your big break as a decorator?
Two years ago photographer Henrique Wilding saw my work and shortly afterwards we shot my first feature for SA Garden and Home magazine. I will always be thankful to her for giving me the opportunity to share my passion.
What’s your dream project?
Designing a 6-star ‘shack’ hotel.
