Essential oils are plant extracts which are made by pressing or steaming the parts of a plant that produce fragrance. Essential oils are an important part of aromatherapy, which is the use of aromatics to promote healing and well-being. Each essential oil is used for different purposes. Here, we’ve put together some of the most common essential oils and their benefits.
Lavender
Lavender is used to promote relaxation and sleep, as well as to alleviate anxiety and stress. It also has antiseptic properties and can be used to treat minor burns. Use lavender essential oil by adding some drops to a bath, putting one or two drops on your pillow or by dabbing it directly onto your skin.
Tea tree
This essential oil has antiseptic and antifungal properties, and is often used to treat insect bites or conditions that affect the skin or nails. Tea tree oil is also used topically as a natural acne treatment.
Rosemary
Rosemary oil is great for memory recall and brain function. Studies also show that rosemary oil can help to promote hair health and growth.
Peppermint
The many benefits of peppermint oil include boosting memory and alertness, relieving headaches and stomach aches, promoting digestion and lifting one’s mood.
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus oil is able to open your nasal passages, allowing you to breathe easier and providing relief from cold and flu symptoms.
Lemon
The sharp and citrusy smell of lemon oil can boost one’s mood and reduce stress and anxiety. Additionally, lemon oil is antibacterial and therefore is often used for cleaning.
Bergamot
Bergamot oil has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety.
Ylang Ylang
Ylang ylang is great for lowering heart rate and stress levels, and can also have anti-inflammatory properties.
