Flowering with an array of rainbow colours. Violets are the bright jewel tone to start cultivating in your garden. These rugged flowers can also be treated as fragrant annual plants blooming in early spring continuing right through mid-summer.

Here are a few tips on how to keep your violets vibrant during summer:

How to keep your violets vibrant

Violas are fairly easy to grow and care for and usually bloom for many months after their initial bloom. The growth of these flowers doesn’t require much. Thriving well in moisture-retaining soils, violet seedlings will sprout well enough if the soil is right. On top of keeping the soil well moisturised, the seedlings will grow happily in the sun but will need a semi-shade.

With the correct placement, expect your seedlings to start sprouting in early spring continuing their bloom until late summer. Just ensure your violets have consistent moisture, especially during the mid-summer months but don’t overwater.

The temperature and humidity of your violets need to be cool. Although violet flowers do okay in the cold weather they are neither drought-tolerant nor heat-tolerant. When it gets too hot, the best you can do is add layers of mulch to keep them cool.

After planting just before you water your growing flowers, add a slow-release fertilizer to the soil to help extend the blooming time. Organic fertilizers keep the flowers healthy while they’re still young and growing.

Caring for your violets

Violets are easy to care for and control. Pruning, repotting, and propagating are some of the ways to keep your violet flowers growing well.

Deadheading your flowers helps promote new growth in the summer growing season. As your violets are growing, they will begin to look overgrown; this is the right time to prune.

When growing violets in containers, choose a well-drained potting mix. Keep them a few inches apart so the roots can have room to spread.
