These plants have leaves that are so interesting, they double up as décor! Their common names are as strange and interesting as the plants themselves. You’ll love these strange but beautiful house plants.
String of pearls (Senecio rowleanus)
This gorgeous succulent is easy to grow and doesn’t need much attention, except for plenty of sunlight. For best results, plant it in a hanging planter or somewhere where you can display its beautifully cascading foliage.
Donkey’s tail (Sedum morganianum)
This super cool succulent is also easy to grow as long as you give it enough sunshine. Like the Senecio rowleanus, these plants are best displayed in hanging planters or in something that allows its leaves to spill over the pot. Even better, you can also easily propagate it through stem cuttings.

Wine cup (Crassula umbella)
Like most succulents, this plant with unique cup-shaped leaves grows well indoors, but is susceptible to rot and bugs, so avoid giving them too much water. The pinkish or yellowish flowers of the wine cup plant add to its appeal.
Asparagus fern (Asparagus setaceus)
There are many plants that are indigenous to South Africa in the asparagus family, but this one is our favourite because of the delicate leaves. In fact, florists often use the leaves in arrangements, and so can you. It likes something to twine around, so plant it in a pot on the floor and when it gets big enough, add a few long sticks for support.
Flaming sword flower (Vriesea splendens)
They might be named after their dramatic flowers, but these bromeliads have pretty impressive leaves and they’re also easy to grow inside the home. Their leaves are long and stripy, with some varieties featuring green to red variegations. Their long-lasting flower spikes make them truly special, but make sure the growing mix has excellent drainage because they really don’t like to have wet roots.
*Remember, when choosing indoor plants, read up on how to take care of them, and establish how child- and pet friendly they are. Just because they have interesting leaves, doesn’t mean they’re all safe to keep around curious pets and kids.
Some plants are also harder to take care of than others, so you’d need to see whether you have the time and devotion to take care of some of these divas.
