When to plant hibiscus

Similar to many plants, these flowers can be bought as young plants and then transplanted into your garden during the warmer spring months. It is normally preferred to grow hibiscus from seed.

Before you take them outside soak the seeds in warm water before sowing. With growing any plant selecting the right location is key. Choose a site that gets full sun as these flowers require ample sunlight. Although they can grow in partial sun, they won’t produce the big flowers hibiscus are known for.

With well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter, your perennial hibiscus will flourish. Since they are more tropical flowers, your hibiscus plants will need frequent watering, especially when young.

When watering, do so deeply and thoroughly, drenching the plant. To help retain all the moisture, organic mulch may be used to encourage water retention. When well-established, ease on the water as too much water can kill your growing flowers.

Common hibiscus problems

Like most flowers, hibiscus is sometimes prone to common plant problems. Whether you grow your plant indoors or outdoors, you can still expect a few of these problems when neglected.

  • Pests –The most common hibiscus pest problem is the red spider mite, especially when the flowers’ humidity levels are not high enough.
  • Yellow leaves – They can indicate sudden changes in weather conditions, improper watering, or insufficient fertilization.
