Growing the Alyssum

This pretty and delicate flower makes an excellent addition to garden borders or growing in garden beds. These easy-to-grow annual flowers are small, cute and will bloom in summer. It blooms with tiny white flowers that have a strong sweet scent.

When growing the alyssum flower you can either directly sow your seeds in the ground or propagate by cuttings. Propagating is useful for producing newer, hybrid types that may sometimes be difficult to obtain. With direct sowing, each seed should be covered only slightly, as alyssum seeds will benefit from exposure to light throughout their germination period.

Plant in spring or early summer in well-drained soil and full sun or light shade. Since the flower is luscious, space your plants about 10-15cm apart. The alyssum flower can thrive in a wide range of soil types making it an ideal flowering plant.

Caring for the Alyssum

Like most plants or flowering plants, the alyssum will need the right care to grow into the luscious flower they are known for. The overall nutrients of your soil play a key role in the plant’s health and production of flowers. The flower is well adapted to different growing conditions, including drier soils.

The plant will still require routine irrigation throughout the growing season. Keep the flowers carefully monitored throughout the summer to keep the soil moisture consistent and have the best possible flower production. High heat temperatures may cause the flower to stop blooming.

Once the growing flower is established, it usually needs little maintenance, as long as adequate watering and light and the soil is well-drained. Alyssum flowers will thrive in a variety of garden soils as long as the soil is well-draining and not consistently damp. While full sun is optimal for flower production, satisfactory results can still be achieved in light shade.
