Isn’t it great to have an awesome summer holiday?  We know we deserve it!

But what does your garden look like on your return? Here are some tips to get your garden back into shape.

Returning from a vacation often presents some challenges for most gardens, that is if you do not have the correct gardening products that keep your plants happy whilst you are away.  In most regions, summer means heavy rainfall and that means you will be coming back to tall grass, unruly hedges, and general garden overgrowth.

Here are some garden maintenance care tips from GARDENA that will get garden back in top form for you to enjoy for the rest of summer.

1. Post-holiday lawn care

If your region has received heavy rain whilst you’re away, this will stimulate grass growth and you may come back to a lawn that resembles a jungle. The key to addressing this is having a lawnmower that provides different settings.

First, raise the blade height and start trimming back the overgrown blades of grass.  You may need to empty out the collection bags a few times during this process.  Secondly, lower the blade height for a finer trim. For this process, you may want to let the grass clippings remain on the grass to give it a tougher exterior. GARDENA’s range of lawnmowers between battery power and electric can cater to all garden sizes and has all the features to make this an easy and effortless task.

Weeds

The most common grief for most gardeners is how quickly weeds take over.  No doubt that back from holiday will see you removing weeds from the lawn and paving.  Again, this can be laborious if you do not have the correct tools.  Introducing the GARDENA Weed Puller, a sophisticated tool that makes it easy on your back when removing weeds from your lawn.

For the paving areas, you have a selection of tools from GARDENA starting with the patio scraper as well as the combi-system weed scraper.

The best time to manually remove weeds is after a rain spell when the soil is moist, making the weeds easier to pull out with their roots intact. The Patio weeder will allow you to grasp the weed as close to the base as possible and by applying a steady force, you can remove both the stem and root, leaving nothing behind.

Overwatering and underwatering

In the absence of an automated watering system, your plants are reliant on manual watering and if this is not consistent, this could stress out your plants.  Automated water controls take out the guesswork when irrigation is required.

If you have grouped your plants according to their watering needs, simply install a GARDENA water control and soil moisture sensor, schedule your irrigation times and days, and voilà your garden is taken care of.

Pest infestation

Pests may have multiplied unchecked while you were away, especially if plants were stressed from lack of care.

If this means that you have to apply liquid pesticides, GARDENA has a range of pressure sprayers that will make this task effortless.  Ranging from 1-litre bottle sprayer to a 12-litre backpack sprayer, choose one that will work for your garden size.

Dead or damaged plants

Some plants may not have survived extreme weather conditions, lack of water, or pest issues. You will have to remove or trim back these plants.

A good quality secateur is ideal for removing small branches, but if you require removing thicker branches, we recommend a high-quality lopper. GARDENA’s range of cutting tools is designed for maximum comfort and a complete focus on tree health.  Precision ground blades provide a precise and clean cut.  All cutting tools come with a 25-year warranty.

Stressed pot or container plants

Potted plants are especially vulnerable since their soil dries out faster and may have been exposed to harsh sunlight.

To prevent dry-out or irregular irrigation, consider the GARDENA AquaBloom solar-powered irrigation set. Simply set a bucket of water, run your AquaBloom drip pipes to your potted plants, and set the frequency. Water will be fed via a micro-drip-irrigation system keeping your plants hydrated this summer.

Prune and trim

Whether it is the hedge, lawn, weeds, or tree branches, summer means regular trimming and maintenance.  Trimming back promotes plant growth so we encourage regular trimming using a good quality tool.

For small pruning tasks, GARDENA offers a range of secateurs, loppers, and hedge clippers.

If you need to trim larger branches, hedges, and shrubs, you can choose from GARDENA StarCut high branch pruner, the GARDENA SlimCut pruner to reach dense overgrowth, and the Power for All telescopic Pruner for most trees and high branches.  GARDENA battery-powered hedge trimmers offer maximum convenience to maintain your hedges
