While many might enjoy squirrels watching, they can be a serious garden problem. Their rummaging is in full swing when they are prepping for winter, which usually happens from late summer to early autumn. If you are looking for ways to keep them out of your garden, here are some humane solutions to try:
These practical but not harmful ideas will completely banish these ravaging creatures from your garden.
Create barriers
Squirrels are good acrobatic creatures and might find unique ways to enter your juicy plants. However, there are humane ways to create effective barriers. These include shielding ground crops with row covers. This helps create an enclosure with effective wiring. Sometimes, even a greenhouse can help protect tempting treats from squirrels. Your yard wall should be a few inches into the ground to keep squirrels from digging under.
Eliminate snack stations
You may love bird feeders, but these are more of a snack station for squirrels than birds. Squirrels see bird feeders as an invitation to come into your garden. Just make sure there are no bird feeders or other attractions in your garden that might bring more of these raving creatures to your garden. Even if you get a squirrel-proof bird feeder, these little animals are persistent and might find ways to the feeders.
Grow plants that repel squirrels
There are some flowers and plants squirrels don’t like to nibble on, plants that fall under the allium category such as onions and garlic. Flowers like daffodils, geraniums, and marigolds can also be useful. Adding layers of dog hair around your plants can also help deter this rodent from your garden.
Encourage natural predators
By this, we employ natural predators. Use squirrel’s natural predators to your advantage by attracting hawks or owls to your garden. Even dogs can help, as they love to chase squirrels. Putting dogs on squirrel patrol lets them scare the squirrels away, keeping your garden squirrel-free.
Although they can provide a few beneficial tricks to your garden, they do more harm than good. Cute but rather destructive.
