There are numerous cacti for beginners from which to choose. Cacti plants come in many variations but most have similar growing characteristics. Here are 5 cacti plants perfect for apartments, and even office space.

So if you want to shake things up and move away from the ordinary houseplants, try cacti variants. They’re easier to grow and make a fun addition to your houseplant collection without requiring too much time.

Scarlet Ball cacti variant

This small rounded cactus has a profusion of delicate spines, almost giving it a fuzzy-like appearance. They produce a single gorgeous orange-red flower that is a beautiful contrast to the white spines on it. Like most cacti plants the scarlet ball also needs bright sunlight and infrequent watering.

Monkey Tail Cactus

The name says it all to describe this cacti plant. This cute cactus is long and slender with fuzzy, hair-like spines shaped like a monkey’s tail. When still young and immature the stems grow upright but as they mature the stems begin to bend resembling monkey tails.

Place this cactus in full sun to part shade, and water when completely dry. The cactus bloom time is late spring to early summer when the warm weather is picking up.

Prickly Pear

Prickly pear cactus plants have flat, oval pads covered in spines that bloom with edible fruits in spring. Because it is a fruit-bearing cactus, it is ideal to grow outside than indoors. Pollinators are attracted to the pink fruit blooms which provide a beautiful contrast to the plant’s spines. Young plants require watering in their first year, but after that, the cacti are low maintenance.

Feather Cactus

The feature cactus has a unique look because of the fluffy feature-like appearance it dawns on. The white feathers on it look soft and fluffy, but they hide the sharp spines that cover around this cactus.

These feathers not only add interest to the cactus, but they also shade the plant from heat and sun. As a succulent the feature cacti plants typically need more watering than their counterparts.

They are classic desert dwellers but can also be grown as houseplants in arid areas, as long as they get a sunny spot and minimal watering.
