Kim Sacks Gallery in Parkwood has opened a new exhibition this month under the theme Botanical. It features works across various mediums like clay, wood, textiles, and jewelry. Regardless of medium and material, though, all pieces reflect the craftsmanship associated with Kim Sacks
The gallery was established in 1986 and moved to its current Parkwood home in 1998. This building was designed in an Adobe style with natural, earthen materials. Kim Sacks combines rural creativity with fine craft, merging the cutting edges of urban designs with folk art.
A variety of South African rural and urban crafters are represented by Kim. This includes those who exhibit their work internationally and define themselves as designers and those who create contemporary pieces with traditional techniques. Kim’s focus is on creativity and what is engendered through recycling, redefining form and function, and what living in Africa today means.
Highlights of the Botanical exhibition are Paul Kristafor’s engraved wooden sculptures, Alistair Blair’s intricate pottery, and the Keiskamma Art Project’s detailed tapestries. To see their pieces and many others in their full glory, stop by Kim Sacks Gallery before November 5th.
