South Africa’s most anticipated celebration of natural beauty and cultural heritage is back! On 8 September 2024, South African National Parks (SANParks) will host a special event at Marakele National Park to mark the beginning of the 19th annual SA National Parks Week.

From 9 to 13 September 2024, this initiative offers an extended weekend on 14 and 15 September at selected national parks, providing a unique opportunity for all to explore and enjoy the wonders of South Africa’s protected areas.

During this period, free access will be granted to most of the 21 national parks managed by SANParks. This is your chance to immerse yourself in South Africa’s diverse landscapes—from the rugged coastline of the Garden Route to the expansive savannahs of Kruger National Park. However, while entry to the parks is free, accommodation facilities and certain tourist activities are not included in the national parks’ free entry week, extra services and activities will require payment.

Since its inception in 2006, SA National Parks Week has become a highly successful campaign, attracting a significant increase in day visitors to the participating parks. This week is not just about free entry; celebrating South Africa’s rich natural, cultural, and historical heritage. SANParks uses this time to foster a sense of pride and responsibility in preserving these treasures for future generations.

The campaign also serves as a vital educational tool, promoting awareness about South Africa’s inclusive approach to conservation. Visitors will gain insights into sustainable development practices through partnerships with local communities, businesses, scientists, and tourists. These collaborations ensure that conservation efforts are both effective and beneficial to those living in and around the national parks.

For specific dates on when each national park will observe SA National Parks Week and allow free access, please refer to SANParks’ official Events page. Here are the parks that will give you free access this Parks Week:
