A small 1984 Durban kitchen in a 1964 building gets a modern boost
“My circa 1980’s kitchen was small, cramped, cluttered and dreadfully dated,” says owner Coba Kodelitsch, who shares this space with her husband.
How this kitchen went from cluttered to streamlined
“I asked Exotic Kitchens to give me some ideas on how to revamp our kitchen. They came up with a concept that we were incredibly happy with – and chaos followed.
“First step was to strip the entire kitchen down to bare brick – a huge undertaking done by Renov8. The plumbing was then modified to accommodate the new cabinetry as it was raised off the floor in case of accidental flooding, and the washing machine had to be moved a few metres to the left.
New plug points were also installed, so new wiring was chased across three walls. The interior door was repositioned 600mm to make space for the coffee station I so desperately wanted inside an alcove below the geyser.
“As I wanted an eco-friendly kitchen, a suspended ceiling was installed to house LED downlighters and a dimmer switch was fitted to save electricity. We bought a new fridge with an A+ rating and the washing machine has an eco-bubble wash cycle that makes it light on power.
“THE END RESULT is a streamlined, eco-friendly space that’s functional and right up to date. And I love my coffee station,” says Coba.
