Whether you are aware of it or not, there are many items in your house that could be repurposed into useful things, giving them a second life. Not only is repurposing eco-friendly and good for the environment, but it’ll save you money in the long run.

Four items you can easily repurpose

Collect plastic grocery bags

Every South African household has that one drawer in the kitchen full of grocery plastic bags. When these plastic bags are saved instead of being thrown away, they can be repurposed into garbage bags, pick up dog waste, and even pack lunches or takeaway food. You will find a way to use your kept plastic bags. If you want to get more creative, you can braid them together and use them to weave everything from baskets to trash cans and even waterproof welcome mats.

Glass jars/bottles

Glass bottles are one of the easiest items to repurpose. They could be used to pack pasta jars, jam jars, to even drinking jars. They have more use in the kitchen and can even be good vases for your bouquet of flowers. The list is endless when working with glass bottles.

Ice cream containers

With a good wash, these can double as your new lunch containers, plant pots, or food prep containers. Every home has its unique way of repurposing these containers. They can save you a lot from spending too much on lunch boxes. A good repurposed ice cream container can go a long way.

Turning your old clothes into rags

Don’t toss out that old t-shirt with holes in it, simply cut it into a useful cleaning cloth. Old towels, sheets, and clothing make excellent reusable cleaning cloths without costing anything. By repurposing these old clothes you’ll be saving money and potentially contributing to the environment.

Egg Cartons

Egg Cartons

Build a mini indoor garden full of sprouting seeds in an egg carton. The egg carton can be used as an environmentally friendly tool. Once your plant seeds in egg cartons are going, you can transfer the entire cardboard carton directly to the ground as the cartoon also provides needed nutrients. The roots of the sprouting plants will eventually grow through the carton, which will eventually compost into the soil.
