If your goal is to get fit this year, but you don’t have a gym membership, here are some tips for creating a home gym in a small space…

You don’t have to have a spare ‘gym’ room and your fitness equipment doesn’t have to overtake your living room to work out at home. You can get fit at home, while maintaining a stylish space, by trying these tips…
Pick a spot
Ask yourself where you want to work out and where you are most likely to get it done. Would you like to do a soothing Pilates workout in your bedroom or do those crunches, squats and tricep dips while catching up on your favourite series in the living room?
Consider the essentials
When it comes to choosing fitness equipment, stick to space-saving essentials. A resistance band, wrist and ankle weights, small dumbbells and an exercise mat can all be tucked away when not in use.

Hiding it is better than storing it
When you know where you are going to exercise, you can start looking for hidden storage for your gear.
In the bedroom, under the bed or in a cupboard is an obvious choice. In the living room, you could use a storage ottoman that also doubles up as your living room coffee table. If you have a raised sofa on legs, you could look for shallow baskets or wooden crates to store workout gear that can slide under the sofa.
Use simple space-saving tech
YouTube is full of great workouts, which means that you don’t need a clunky treadmill to do cardio indoors – you can follow a HIIT or Zumba workout from your smart TV or your smartphone for free. You can also look into fitness apps and DVDs for workouts that you can follow from the comfort of your small home.
