D.I.Y Garden projects are always a good idea!

If you have an old suitcase that you want to make use of,  recycle them into containers for a vintage-inspired colourful display. This is a fun project to do with the kids or to enjoy by yourself in the tranquil space of your own garden.

This works perfectly for small garden spaces too!

You will need:

  • Old suitcase
  • Plastic lining
  • Scissors
  • Drill
  • Gravel
  • Potting soil

Steps:

  1. Clean the suitcase thoroughly to remove any dust, dirt, or mould from storage.
  2. If the suitcase is made of a material that can be drilled, drill several small holes in the bottom for drainage. For softer materials, use a sharp knife or scissors to make holes.
  3. Cut the plastic lining to fit the suitcase to protect the material from water damage. Place the lining inside the suitcase, covering the bottom and sides. Trim any excess, but leave a little overhang at the top to prevent water from seeping into the suitcase material. Cut holes into the lining to allow excess moisture to drain.
  4. Place a layer of gravel at the bottom of the suitcase to keep the lining in place.
  5. Fill the suitcase with potting soil, leaving some space below the opening to fill with plants and stop soil from spilling out when watering. Make small holes in the soil and fill with seedlings of your choice.

Tips

Paint the outside of the suitcase or add decorations to match your garden or home decor.

Consider placing the suitcase on a stand or attaching to a wall to improve drainage and to prevent it from sitting directly on a wet surface.

Use annuals and change plants according to the seasons for a continuously fresh look.

Skip the drainage holes and follow the same steps to turn your suitcase into a vase for a fresh-cut flower display.
