This is a hack everyone should be trying out to avoid clogged smelly drains. Everyone knows the sinking feeling of a clogged drain and does not want the inconveniences that come with it. Unclogging your drains doesn’t have to be nasty.

Here’s how to clear a clogged drain using bicarbonate of soda (or baking soda).

Bicarbonate of soda has disinfectant properties to combat odour-causing bacteria and fungi. Regular cleaning with bicarbonate of soda may prevent clogs from forming in the future due to the strong properties of sodium. Instead of going the professional route, try sorting out the issue yourself with this easy guide:

What you’ll need:

  • Boiling water
  • Dish soap
  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • Vinegar (Optional)

Steps to follow:

1. Boil water

Boil water in a kettle so that the hot water will break down the matter clogging your drain.

2. Pour the water into the drain

Pour dishwashing liquid into the drain and then carefully pour your boiling water down the drain. The dish soap will help dissolve greasy clogs before moving on to the baking powder.

3. Pour the bicarbonate of soda into the drain

Pour one cup of bicarbonate of soda into the drain. You can use a measuring cup to do this. For excessive clogging, you can pour two cups of bicarbonate of soda directly into the sink.

You can follow up with white vinegar for stubborn clogs. When these substances are mixed, they produce a fizzy reaction that helps unclog your drain.

4. End off with more boiling water

After the fizzing goes down, pour 2 or 3 cups of boiling water down the drain. Flush your drain with more water until the clogging has subsided. If necessary, you can repeat all the steps for optimal results.
