Cape Town is a vibrant hub of local creativity, teeming with talented artisans and craftsmen who bring their ideas to life through unique handmade pieces.
The city boasts numerous craft markets that significantly contribute to the local economy. Here are a few craft markets you should check out.
Greenmarket square
One of the oldest public spaces in Cape Town is popular as a historic flea market. This market is immersed with local and some of Africa’s greatest art pieces. The market offers unique canvas artworks, leather goods, handcrafted beaded accessories, and sometimes African-inspired clothing.
The market’s vendors come from every walk of life around the African continent allowing you to mingle and buy trinkets as memorabilia. Operating around 9 am to 5 pm daily right in the city centre.
The Watershed market
Just outside the CBD but right at the centre of the iconic Waterfront area. The watershed local craft market showcases the best of local arts the city has to offer. This market creates a distinctive shopping experience offering a peek into what the City has to offer in the art and design scene.
Featuring over 150 stalls all selling different handcrafted items. The watershed market is operated daily from 10 am to 7 pm.
Imiso Ceramics
Right at the heart of Woodstock, the Imiso ceramic offers one-of-a-kind pieces that make gorgeous collectables. This contemporary African art studio holds some much meaning as the ceramicists are award-winning and present such a deep intricate meaning in the sculptures they create.
Their opening hours are from Monday to Saturday, from 9 am to 5 pm.
Chandler House
Small but iconic. Sighted right at the iconic Bo Kaap houses, this small gallery, store and studio produces locally created Cape Town crafts. Crafts that depict the deep history of the town. The Chandler House houses only up-and-coming Cape Town artists.
Although they have a small selection of art, they are worth the visit at 134 Church Street in Boo Kaap. Opening from Monday to Friday, 10 am to 5 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.
The creativity of the Cape is dynamic with a combination of history and modern art. Whether you’re intrigued by Cape Town’s local craft markets or the city’s artisan studios, you’ll go home with a one-of-a-kind piece and an unforgettable memory.
