Tracey Swart had always dreamt of injecting more personality into her home, but it took a violent storm that flooded the house to make those dreams a reality. “As I had to refurnish the room I decided to give it a completely new look with light, airy colours reminiscent of the seaside,” explains Tracey.

With the help of Bronwyn Hill of BHD Interiors, the original black and white scheme was swapped for a palette of creams and pale duck egg blues to give the area a tranquil, relaxed feel.
Tracey acquired a new L-shaped sofa and two small armchairs which keep the room uncluttered, yet can seat six people easily. A series of framed black and white photographs above the sofa and a seagrass rug subtly demarcate the living area – a clever idea in an open-plan space. Another good idea is the transparent coffee table that enhances the uncluttered feel.’

The square dining room table was replaced with a round version which, combined with new curved back chairs, instantly creates a more casual, welcoming feel. Bevelled mirrors were hung above the existing sideboard to reflect light into the room and give the illusion of extra space. To create a focal point they wallpapered the far dining room wall. “The grass cloth was the perfect choice as it gives the room depth and adds texture,” explains Bronwyn.
Now that the room has a much better flow from the kitchen through to the garden, Tracey finds that she entertains much more than she used to. “I love the calmness, the light colours and the use of natural fibres and textures,” says Tracey. “I feel very comfortable in this space – it’s much more me.”
