Spruce up your backyard by creating a family-friendly fire pit. A simple feature to elevate your yard. An outdoor fire pit helps transform your backyard into a functioning outdoor area.

Whenever you think of a DIY project, brainstorming, planning, and mapping out the idea is always where you need to start.

The great thing about a fire pit is it can either be expensive or cost-friendly depending on the materials used.

Materials Needed:

  • Shovel for digging
  • Gravel for filling the pit
  • Block of brick for the building part
  • Weed blocker sheet
  • Mixing cement for the mixing

Step 1

Outline the space you’ll use

Clear out the area you plan to use for the fire pit, making sure it’s clear of debris. By doing this, you’re expanding the space so it’s easier to dig. With the debris removed, measure the space before you begin digging.

Step 2

Start digging

This is where you start digging with your shovel. The depth of the hole depends on you, but you want the fire pit to be lower so that the heat still hits you, but enough to keep the fire pit stable. After digging the right depth, place your weed blocker on top to help prevent weeds from piercing through. Now fill your fire pit hole with gravel until the gravel is level with the ground. The gravel gives the hole pit an important drainage area when it rains.

Step 3

Begin the building process

Place your building blocks around the edge of the gravel circle and use a cement mix to complete the building. To get the fire pit extra secure make sure the building blocks are placed equally and pushed down into the ground. Use rebars for additional reinforcement.

Step 4

Use mortar to attach everything

Make sure your fire pit is level. Use mortar to attach everything. Apply it at the top of the block, in between and around the entire built fire pit. Using mortar hardens the bricks, and concrete making sure everything doesn’t move.

Step 5

Now complete and ready for use

After everything has been completed and dried, you can use your fire pit. Before you use the fire pit, be sure the gravel stones are dry enough. To add finishing touches, you can paint it any colour you want, but that is entirely up to you.
