Earthshot, launched by Prince William in 2020 in search of the most innovative solutions to the world’s greatest environmental challenges. The aim is to discover and support innovative ideas that help regenerate the planet by scaling the environmental innovations. These awards are held in different cities each year focusing on what each continent has to offer in sustaining the planet.

The fourth edition of the Prince’s annual Earthshot Prize awards was hosted in Cape Town this week. This was the first time it had been held on African soil. Fifteen finalists, from countries including France, Kenya, Indonesia, the UK, and Nepal, were chosen from over 2,500 applicants to compete for their category’s prize pot.

Earthshot has five goals that guide its work:

  1. Protect and Restore Nature;
  2. Clean our Air;
  3. Revive our Oceans;
  4. Build a Waste-free World;
  5. and Fix our Climate.

The Earthshot Prize Awards explained:

The Earthshot Prize was established to identify and highlight innovative solutions aimed at addressing the environmental challenges our planet faces today. Since its inception by Prince William, these awards have supported entrepreneurs in developing climate-friendly businesses that align with the goals of Earthshot.

Prince William has noted that he wishes toinspire new generations of innovators and leaders to help solve some of the biggest environmental challenges.”

Each year the organization searches the world for businesses or individuals with environmental solutions that show the greatest potential to scale to achieve their five Earthshots. Individuals or businesses are selected by a committee of leading environmental experts.

This committee selects finalists from around the world to participate in the Earthshot Prize. This year, out of 15 finalists, only five will be chosen for their outstanding solutions that align with the Earthshot Prize objectives. Each finalist focuses on one of the five goals, demonstrating how their initiative can positively impact the planet. Each winner of the five categories receives a prize of 1 million pounds.

The Earthshot Prize aims to find and develop solutions that heal the planet as we confront significant challenges to restore the Earth over the next 10 to 15 years.
