Cape Town’s rugged beauty is renowned for its dramatic landscapes, with Table Mountain standing proudly as the city’s iconic backdrop.
But while the cableway offers a quick way to the summit, those who want to truly experience the mountain’s wild charm should consider exploring its trails on foot.
1. Skeleton Gorge
For a hike that combines both a physical challenge and natural beauty, head to Skeleton Gorge, which begins at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. This shaded path ascends steeply through lush indigenous forest, offering a cool respite even on hot summer days.
In the summer months of January and February, keep an eye out for the rare Disa uniflora, an exquisite wild orchid endemic to the Cape. Once you reach the top of the gorge, you can continue towards the summit reservoirs, which provide a surprising and peaceful stop before returning to Kirstenbosch via Nursery Ravine.
2. Devil’s Peak
Devil’s Peak is the perfect choice for experienced hikers who love a challenge. This hike is a tougher ascent with a rougher path, but the reward is breathtaking. Starting on Tafelberg Road, you’ll climb steeply towards the saddle, where a detour to Pulpit Rock offers magnificent city views.
The final push to the summit provides panoramic 360-degree vistas of the surrounding city, the Cape Peninsula and beyond. This route is ideal for adventurous hikers looking to escape the crowds.
3. Platteklip Gorge
For those eager to say they’ve truly ‘climbed’ Table Mountain, Platteklip Gorge is the fastest route to the top. Starting from Tafelberg Road, just past the popular coffee truck, the path ascends directly up a dramatic gorge carved into the front face of the mountain.
Although the steep and strenuous climb can be challenging, the stone steps make it relatively straightforward, if tiring. It’s essential to carry plenty of water, especially in the summer months, when the gorge can get incredibly hot.
4. Noordhoek Peak
For a more relaxed but equally rewarding hike, Noordhoek Peak offers an accessible adventure with stunning views. Starting from the Silvermine reservoir, located a short drive from the city centre, this well-marked gravel road takes you up to Noordhoek Peak.
Along the way, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Hout Bay and the surrounding coastline. This circular route loops back to the reservoir, where you can cool off with a swim, making it an excellent option for a summer outing.
5. Constantia Nek
If you’ve indulged in some wine tasting in the Constantia Valley and want to burn off those calories, the Constantia Nek trail is a gentle yet scenic route. Starting from the parking area at Constantia Nek, this wide jeep track leads you through shaded forests and offers magnificent views over the city.
It’s a perfect hike for a relaxed afternoon, with a chance to spot local wildlife like the black sparrowhawk. The trail ends at Kirstenbosch, where you can reward yourself with a cool drink or snack at the garden’s tea room.
