Goji berries, also known as wolfberries, are loved most for their nutritional value. Their rare sweet berries taste fruity and similar to dates and raisins. They give nutritional value both to humans and the soil, goji berries repair soil that has been depleted due to unsustainable farming or erosion. The goji berry plant is adaptable to many weather conditions making it easy to grow and nurture.

Planting Goji berry

Goji berry is a tall plant with long thin branches and pointy leaves which flower in mid spring and summer. It tolerates a variety of soil types and can survive extreme weather conditions. Water the seedlings regularly, however it does not require much watering after the tree has turned woody. Goji berries can grow in pots or directly in the soil.

Support and Spacing

Goji berry branches are thin and draping therefore they need extra support such as trellises, plant cages and fencing. Space your berry trees 1.3 to 1.8 metres apart.

Pruning

Goji berry thrives best when the main branch is regularly pruned for optimal growth, steadiness and flowering.

Harvesting

The Goji plant begins flowering in the second year with maximum fruit production in the fourth to fifth year. The fruit changes colour from orange to red, the nutritional value of the fruit increases as it ripens to a bright red colour. Goji berries are fragile and easily bruised with a shelve life of about a week. The fruits can be appreciated fresh, they are also edible as dried berries or frozen for longer preservation.
