Many of us are trying to use less chemicals in our garden, but what do you do when you can’t get rid of a pest that keeps getting to your plants? Here are our top suggestions for how to handle garden pests naturally.

Interplanting

Interplanting refers to alternating different types of plants. This serves to confuse pests, as they are attracted to monoculture or groups of the same plants.

Strong-smelling plants

Many pests are repelled by potently scented plants like onions and garlic. Herbs like chives, coriander, rosemary and basil can also deter pests due to their strong smell. Plant these either around the perimeter of your garden or amongst your plants to get rid of pests.

Cayenne pepper

Some types of pests are deterred from eating plant leaves when the leaves are coated in a cayenne pepper solution. To make the solution, mix one tablespoon of cayenne pepper with one litre of water. Spray the mixture all over the leaves and stems of the plants that are being eaten.

Coffee grounds

Coffee grounds can deter pests due to their smell and also form a barrier that pests like snails and slugs don’t like to crawl over. Simply sprinkle coffee grounds around your garden or set out bowls of them.

Marigolds

Marigolds are a well-known plant for getting rid of pests. Their roots omit a strong smell which many animals and insects don’t like. Plant marigolds next to or amongst your plants to deter a variety of pests.
