Fungus Gnats Part 3: How To Get Rid Of Adult Fungus Gnats

Getting rid of adult fungus gnats prevents them from laying more eggs, so it’s an important step to take in the complete eradication of these bugs. There are many effective methods you can choose from to eliminate your gnat problem.

Sticky Traps

Sticky traps are a popular favourite for getting rid of fungus gnats. Yellow sticky traps are readily available and are highly effective. Just push the staked end of the trap into the soil, and the yellow sticky portion will do the rest. Insects around your houseplant will fly into the trap and get stuck. When the trap gets full, throw it out and put up another. You can keep putting out traps until no more gnats are getting stuck.

Apple Cider Vinegar Traps

For a DIY solution to your fungus gnat problem, you can create your own apple cider vinegar traps. Pour about 1/4 of an inch of apple cider vinegar into a shallow dish or saucer, and drizzle in some dish soap. Cover the dish with plastic wrap, and poke holes into it with a fork or toothpick. Fungus gnats will crawl inside to get to the vinegar, and the dish soap renders them unable to get back out.

Pesticides

If the adult fungus gnats problem is still not resolved, look to natural insecticides to help. Look for any products that target fungus gnats – they often tackle other pests too. Be careful if you have pets as some of these products can be harmful, depending on the ingredients. Lightly spray your plants according to instructions to kill any adult gnats.
