If Spain has its Girona flower festival, South Africa has its own local celebration of all things floral and beautiful with Stellenbosch Garden Town. Here’s what you’ll find at Spier Wine Farm during the 10-days of botanical jamboree:
Making compost easy
Spier’s Food Garden Workshop offers an interactive lesson to get you on your way to home-grown nutritious food. Megan McCarthy, Spier’s resident expert food grower, will teach you how to mimic nature’s best teacher and make fertile soil. You’ll get tips on how to start and maintain compost heaps, getting the right ratio of carbon and nitrogen, and how to brew your own micro-organism inoculants. Top this off with a Spring organic wine pairing and make it the perfect Saturday.

Meet the Tree-preneurs
Get inspired – meet the tree-preneurs who are ensuring that safe and knowledgeable hands are stewarding the future of South Africa’s indigenous trees and plants. This work is not open to the public under usual circumstances, making this a unique opportunity to sneak a peek at how Spier works to make the wine farm and planet greener. Lesley, the project manager, will guide guests through the nursery and share the inspiring stories of this project and the people behind it.

River Walk
While this walk is for everyone, if you have a soft spot for proteas, fynbos and wildflowers, this is an adventure worth the trek. Spier’s Nursery Manager Wilton Sikhosana will offer a guided walk that begins at the Manor house and follows a circular path, exploring plants and flowers part of Spier’s rehabilitation project in all their diversity and beauty.

Garden-inspired food & wine
We don’t make the rules; we just follow them! You can’t visit the Winelands of Stellenbosch without tasting its wine and indulging in its culinary treasures. Luckily, Spier has you covered this Garden Town. The Tasting Room will open its fragrant doors to allow guests, gardeners, wine-lovers and everyone in between the chance to test their tastebuds with Spier’s Spring wine and food pairing. Four wonderful wines will dance with the unique food pairings to leave you wanting more.
Finish off the experience with a season picnic basket on one of Spier’s beautiful lawns beneath the oaks on a supplied blanket, and let the birds, farm-life and sunshine soak in.
