The 2023 Garden Trends Report by the Garden Media Group has been released with some interesting insights for the year ahead in gardening. From terracotta to TikTok, these are just some of the trends to watch in 2023.

Throwbacks

Labeled ‘Down Aging’, it’s clear that the trends of today are calling back to the past. The 70s, 80s and even 90s are back in fashion once again, not only in the fashion world, but also in the plant world. Retro outdoor furniture, tropical plantings and houses filled with houseplants will continue to make a splash in 2023.

Ancient Greece

As if going back 50 years wasn’t far enough, the influence of Ancient Greece will also take centre stage in gardens. Staples of the romantic age – Grecian statues and formal hedges surrounded by Mediterranean plants – will become increasingly popular next year, already showing a rising interest.

The impacts of climate change are everywhere – particularly in the increasingly hot summers experienced around the world. In an effort to combat this change, public spaces are slowly filling up with heat-resistant trees to provide much-needed shade and to improve the surrounding environment at the same time.

TikTok has taken over the internet completely, with a mass of content that ensures there is always something tailored to your interests, including in gardening. PlantTok, the gardening side of TikTok, is focusing on planting native plants and making gardening accessible to anyone, no matter your age or gardening space available.

Terracotta

The gardening colour of the year is terracotta, and for good reason. This gorgeous rich orange is already common in gardens, becoming a highlight in 2023 with the increased focus on earthy tones and a look back to the colour trends of the 60s and 70s. Terracotta is easily applied through the use of pots, but also in the wide range of deep orange plants available on the market.
