Make a flower bouquet like an expert

John Meyburgh, floral designer at NetFlorist, shows us how to make a 2-in-1 Valentine’s Day flower arrangement

You’ll need:

  • 30 Roses (red, pink and cerise)
  • 10 Stems of penny gum (eucalyptus)
  • 30 Stems of ruscus
  • 10 Stems of viburnum
  • Ribbon
  • Flower scissors
  • Rose stripper
  • Vase

Before you start:

  1. Prepare your work area first.
  2. Ensure that you have everything you need placed in front of you.
  3. Place the foliage to the left and roses to the right.

  1. Prepare the roses and foliage by removing the extra leaves from the bottom of the stems and clean the thorns off the roses, using a rose stripper.
  2. To make the bouquet start by putting the foliage together. Add the roses (the more flowers and foliage you add, the bigger your bouquet will be and the fuller it will look).
  3. Continue until the desired effect is achieved.
  4. To ensure that the balance of flowers and foliage is perfect, take a look at the bouquet from the top. If the roses are hidden underneath the foliage, gently pull the rose heads towards you, pulling them out a little so that they stand out.
  5. Once you’re happy with the look of the bouquet, tie it up using a beautiful ribbon. You can make a bow if you wish.
  6. To neaten the ends of the bouquet, simply cut off ends in a half-moon shape. Make sure all of the stems are the same length and always cut stems at an angle.
  7. For a very modern look wrap the bouquet in brown craft paper.

  1. Clean a vase and fill it up with water.
  2. Determine the length of the flowers according to the size of the vase. If the stems are toolong, simply cut them shorter in a half-moon shape and at an angle.
  3. If the ribbon is still on the bouquet, cut it off.
  4. While holding the bouquet tightly, gently drop the flowers in the water.
  5. The flowers will fall into place.
  6. Cut off all of the foliage that is taller than the roses.
