Take your cue from Claire Clarke of By Dezign Interiors and give your master bedroom a luxe new look
1. Makeover the headboard
“Headboards tend to be the main focus in any bedroom,” says Claire. “Reupholstering an existing one will instantly create a feeling of luxury, and I always turn to a plush cotton velvet. I added some studded detailing to break the dark tone of the fabric and repeated the fabric on the bed base to avoid untidy bed frills.”
2. Incorporate sofas and ottomans
“Placing items such as a sofa or ottoman at the end of the bed is a great way to add comfy seating and storage for winter blankets, especially if you have a long room. Big pieces may overpower the space though, so I opted for pale-toned, plain upholstery fabrics that add a sense of lightness and calm.”
3. Try floating shelves
“Changing your traditional side tables for a floating design is a good way to create a more clean-lined, contemporary feel,” says Claire. The drawers add welcome storage and Claire combined a crisp white Duco finish with natural timber fronts.

4. Paint existing furniture
“I updated my client’s existing chairs and table by painting them white and covering them in Threads Continuous Linen from St Leger & Viney. It’s a gorgeous, embellished fabric and the white tones add a sense of sophistication. The plain white shutters control light effectively and enhance the serene, clutter-free atmosphere.”

5. Replace the carpet
“We replaced the old carpets with wood-look vinyl which is easily installed and can be used with underfloor heating. It’s both quiet and soft underfoot, and we used it in the en suite bathroom as well to create a sense of continuity.”
